An Apprentice Mindset vs. a Professional Mindset

I attribute this post to a client who deeply inspired me during one of our sessions. He spoke about the attributes of being an apprentice. Afterwards as I was unpacking the session on paper it hit me that an apprenticeship mindset could be a great strategy to deal with failure and frustration on the job but not only on the job.

Think about this for a minute; what does it mean to have an apprenticeship mindset? What happens when we are an apprentice? We're in training to learn to become skilled at something. We're open to learning and growth yet also allowing ourselves to make mistakes because your mindset is one of learning a skill that we don't know as opposed to a professional. We tend to be less judgmental of our results because we understand that we're on a learning curve and our self expectations are lowered.

What happens when we become a professional at something? We're skilled and are supposed to know right?  We have a natural tendency to think we should have known when we make a mistake and when mistakes occur we take it to a more severe degree of self judgment don't we? Our self expectations benchmark is automatically raised when we have a professional mindset.

If we could adopt the apprenticeship mindset of life learning and growth yet be a skilled professional at what we do there would be a significant paradigm shift towards a more learning and growth orientated type of mindset, less self judgment and more flexibility with the expectations we set for ourselves; yet with all the professional skills at hand.

Churchill once said: "Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm".

Maybe if we tried to adopt an apprentice mindset where mistakes are part of the process we could live this quote through to reach the goals and success we strive so hard to achieve?

הפוטנציאל של פסח The Pesach Potential

Pesach is symbolic of the potential that exists in each one of us – the ability to make decisions from a place of freedom and choice.
Pesach is symbolic of the junction that we all come to from time to time in our lives – making responsible choices that forge our future destiny.

I invite you to think about your choices and decisions that you have made and will make in the future; and ask yourself if you made your choices from a place of freedom and responsibility for your own destiny?

May you and yours have a happy chag.

"Name it Claim it Aim it"

3 Short Steps for choosing the "right" JOB

Discover and NAME your own internal strengths and values, CLAIM them and AIM them to find a job that you excel in and feel is right for you.

Name it: What are personal strengths and values?
Strengths are your very own unique combination of talents, knowledge and skills. You can use your strengths to maximize your potential and position yourself to do what you do best everyday. People who are able to use their talents and abilities naturally excel. People who use their strengths everyday are 6 X more likely to be engaged on the job. (Statistical information taken from Gallup Strengths Center).

Personal values guide our decision making. Your values are the things that you believe are important in the way you live and work. They help you determine your priorities and they are probably the measures you use to tell if your life is turning out the way you want it to. When the things that you do and the way you behave match your values, life is usually good – you're satisfied. But when things don’t align with your values that’s when things feel wrong. For example if you value family, but work a 70 hour week in your job you will feel internal stress and conflict. When you’re aware of your values you can make decisions about how to live your life and are able to answer questions like;

1) What job should I pursue?
2) Should I accept this promotion?
3) Should I start my own business?

A combination of strengths and values coupled with the ideal task or job can create "flow"* – something you definitely want to aim to accomplish. Flow is when a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. You don't notice the time it took to do the task you set yourself.

Now your task is to NAME your top 5 Strengths. Make a list of the top 5 things you excel in professionally. Then NAME the top 5 Values according the following guiding question:
Identify times you were fulfilled, happy, found meaning and satisfied?
What values were present that made you fulfilled and satisfied?

Claim it: Claim and internalizing your unique strengths and values. An exercise for you to do that will help you internalize and claim your strengths and values on the way to aiming for the right job. Draw a 90 degree right angle where on one side has a list of all your strengths and the other side has a list of all your values. Then open the web and look for job descriptions that align your strengths and your values with the job descriptions. Plot the title of the jobs between the two sides of the right angle and look to see if new directions have opened up for you in your job search.

Aim it: Harnessing your strengths and values by aiming them to set up job networking meetings, re-writing your C.V. according to new job opportunities, sending your C.V to the right places. Start focusing on what you really want. You'll see that because of these realizations and new focus you will feel more determined to seek out the "right" job for you because you know what you're good at and what you fundamentally believe is the right step forward for you.
